PSY-3215 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Subliminal Stimuli, Absolute Threshold, Limen
Document Summary
Subliminal perception: the study of the control of your perception below threshold. Below threshold = the point which you detect stimulus less than 50% of the time. Points on the psychophysical function curve vary due to outside noise, etc. The observer knows the sequence / they know the next sequence will be more intense (ascending series) or less intense (descending series) - they can base their answers on their knowledge of the sequence. Method of constant stimuli: a range of stimuli are selected, from below threshold to above threshold. You have to present all stimuli in this method, as opposed to the method of limits where you stop at the transition (i. e. , why it is called constant stimuli) Still forced choice answers ( did you hear this, yes or no? ) The best method to use, because it gives you the most stable thresholds. Method of adjustment: observer makes adjustment to stimulus source until threshold is achieved.
