Innovation: adolescents accept the cultural goal but reject institutional means of attaining it, they may pursue other paths that frequently are not legitimate. Ritualism: although they may have abandoned the cultural goals, some juveniles will continue to abide by the acceptable means for attaining them. Retreatism: individuals have rejected both the goals of the culture and the institutionalized means of attaining them that have retreated from their society. Rebellion: rejecting the values and institutions of one"s culture and substituting for them a new set of values and institutions: blocked opportunity: limited or nonexistent chance of success; according to strain theory, a key factor in delinquency. Opportunity theory: people want the opportunity to be somebody in life, so they join one of three different subcultures: criminal subculture: partake in stealing, robbing, embezzlement, etc.
