STT-2810 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Local Regression
Document Summary
Check to see if there may have been an error in the data collection or data input. Check to see if there was an extraordinary outcome. Misunderstanding of a survey question by participant. Timeplots display every data value on a timeline. Connecting the dots of a timeplot can sometimes better illustrate the trends. Connecting the dots is better for either fewer data values or with less variation. Drawing a curve of typical values in the area of the graph can sometimes tell the story better. There are many ways of doing this and a computer or calculator can be used to create this curve. This is called the loess curve and helps the eye follow the main trend and spot the outliers. Time plots can sometimes be used to predict future trends. Predicting the future with a time plot does not always work. Avoid inconsistent scales: do(cid:374)"t co(cid:373)pare o(cid:374)e thi(cid:374)g (cid:373)easure i(cid:374) seconds to another measure in hours.
