BIOL 300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Chemical Polarity, Hydrophile, Homeostasis
Document Summary
Identify characteristics that are common to all living things. All living organisms share several key characteristics or functions: order, sensitivity or response to the environment, reproduction, adaptation, growth and development, regulation, homeostasis, energy processing, and evolution. When viewed together, these nine characteristics serve to define life. Recognize if a characteristic of life refers to individuals or populations. Characteristics like reproduction and evolution refer to populations. Just because individuals cannot reproduce does not mean that an entire population is sterile. Evolution happens in a population as a whole. Basically all other characteristics of life listed above point refer to individuals. Explain how molecules of water interact with each other in the liquid state. Water molecules are formed by strong polar covalent bonds. The molecules interact with other water molecules through weak hydrogen bonds. Determine if a molecule will interact with water based on its charge and polarity. The polarity of water affects how other substances interact with water.
