NATR 320 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Quadrat, Transect, Fecundity
Document Summary
Dispersion = spatial arrangement of individuals within a population. Plant that needs sun won"t grow next to a big shady plant. Absolute population size = estimate of a population"s actual abundance. Relative population size = the number of individuals in one time interval or place. How does wolf population affect elk population size? relative to the number in another. Number of cougar tracks found in an area. Number of fish caught in a lake. How many birds you see walking through the forest. Cheaper, easier way to measure population size. Could mean theres less animals, or just that the animals are less active. (average of # of bugs in each quadrat) / quadrat size = x bugs / m^2. Line transect = straight line from which the distance to each individual is measured. Detection function = converts distance measurements into estimates of absolute population size.
