Document Summary
Self-esteem: our positive or negative evaluations of ourselves. A state of mind that varies in response to success, failure, social interactions, and other life experiences. Mark leary: people are inherently social animals driven by a primitive need to connect with others and gain their approval. High self-esteem: happy, healthy, productive, and successful. Low self-esteem: anxious, depressed, pessimistic, poorer health, and prone to failure. Traits that describe the person you actually are. Traits that describe the person you ought to be (responsibilities, obligations) Traits that describe the person you would like to be, your ideal self. A mismatch between your actual and ideal selves will lead to disappointment, frustration, sadness, feeling unfulfilled, and lowed self-esteem. Greater harm occurs when one focuses on these self-discrepancies. We spend surprisingly little time thinking about ourselves. Self-awareness is often an unpleasant mental state that we retreat from. People report a negative mood state when placed in front of a mirror.
