Overcame major objections to the copernican view. Three key objections rooted in the geocentric view were the following: Earth could not be moving because objects in air are not left behind . Noncircular orbits are no perfect as heavens should be. If earth were really orbiting sun we"d detect stellar parallax. Bears more responsibility for the birth of modern science than any other individual. Tried for heresy by inquisition in 1633 due to public defense of heliocentric. Did not invent the telescope (made in netherlands/holland by opticians) Systematic observations of heavenly bodies in late 1609. Saturn appeared to have ears" that appeared and disappeared over time. This implied that saturn was imperfect, not spherical and changed in time. The surface of the moon revealed mountains, valleys, and craters. The sun showed dark spots that appeared, disappeared, and changed shape. The sun rotates on an axis just like the earth.
