Organizations are particular types of institutions but only some institutions are organizations. Both formal members and the general public participate in institutions, not organizations. Institutions have four common characteristics: sets of norms that prescribe how individuals are supposed to act, endure over time, enforced by some sort of sanction. 4)organize human relations in pursuit of some function. So, groups affect both collective identities and collective action. Secondary groups: we choose to join, pursue goal. Allow humans to do things they can"t do alone. Network: most basic social group, can have a variety of sizes and purposes. Organizations/institutions: much larger and more enduring, also can have diverse functions. So far, we"ve already completed several components of this introductory class. Described the science of sociology and its methods. Reviewed major concepts: culture, socialization, social relations, social structures, norms, roles, groups, etc. Now, we"re ready for the last and longest component. Reviewing several of the major substantive areas.
