Processing women and girls in criminal justice system. 3 general forms of sexual discrimination in laws: implementing & applying gender-specific laws, applying gender-neutral laws differently for men vs female offenders, applying gender-neutral laws in a manner that values males" victimizations more seriously than females. Gender-neutral laws are written so that no differences are made regarding the application to either males or females. Gender-specific laws are specific in application that they apply to one sex or they apply differently to the sexes. The 1st women-only prisons in england & usa were designed to help women. They were called reformatories and industrial homes. Judge"s imposed indeterminate (uncertain) sentences for females and determinate (fixed) sentences for males. Gender-specific laws started in order to increase the age of victims in statutory rape. Formal efforts to raise the age of which females could legally consent to be sexually active.
