Spiritualism is centered around the idea that people who commit crimes are possessed by evil spirts or demons. The classical school of criminology was highly influenced by jeremy bentham and his hedonistic calculus. In bentham"s view the criminal is someone who can calculate the cost and benefit of committing or not committing a crime. The classical school was influenced by cesare beccaria. Only deterred if the punishment is swift, certain, and severe. Views criminals as predetermined, basically being a criminal has a biological aspect. That they don"t really have a say and they just have to commit the crime. To prove this, the positivist school sought to obtain empirical proof. Cesare lombroso intended to obtain this empirical proof through his anatomical studies of individuals. He claimed that criminals were physically different than other individuals and were a throwback to earlier forms of humans. He believed that you could tell someone was a criminal just by looking at them.
