Genre is a french word meaning kind" or type". It"s related to the term genus as used in biology to classify types of animals. It is used to describe a type of film. There is a belief that genres aren"t set that they can change. Some don"t agree though, suggesting that genres are fairly set. Richard maltby suggests that genres are flexible, subject to constant process of change and adaptation. he suggests that generic boundaries can never be rigidly defined, and all generic groupings are susceptible to extensive subdivision. Some films don"t fall easily into one genre or another. Several films blend genres, using several types of genres. What places a group of films in a genre: Manner of presentation musicals are not always based on their plot; rather, it is the manner of presenting the film via music. Plot patterns film noir is largely defined by its look and general theme that life doesn"t work out for the protagonist.
