Document Summary

Conformity is defined as going along with peers who have no special right to direct our behavior (going along with your peers or in that environment) Obedience is defined as compliance with higher authorities in a hierarchical structure. Conformity: going to an asu football game in asu apparel. Anything that violates the social norm is considered deviant (but isn"t always negative) Refers to simple everyday norms based on customs, traditions, or etiquette. Example: not saying please, thank you, wearing clothes inside out. Norms based on broad social morals whose infraction would generate more serious social condemnation. Example: sex before marriage (after being told not to) The strongest social norms supported by codified social sanctions. Durkheim: deviance is functional for a society. We wouldn"t know what a utopian society would be without deviance. We learn from the groups we associate with.
