The way its parts work together to create specific effects. Style: the use of four categories of cinematic techniques. Cinema is an art bc it offers filmmakers ways to design experiences for viewers, and those experiences can be valuable regardless of their pedigree. Critical flicker fusion: makes the human eye see a continuous beam of light instead of a flicker (break) of light beam. Apparent motion: when a visual display is changed rapidly enough to trick the eye into perceiving motion (neon sign, flipbook) Ribbon of still images, moved from one frame at a time past a light source whether through a camera or a projector. Some changes to that in recent years (the hobbit 2013)
