Document Summary

Matter consists of chemical elements in pure form and in combinations called compounds. Matter: takes up space, has mass, can exist as solid, liquid, or gas. Element: a substance that can not be broken down by chemical means -iron gold. Compound: substance of two or more elements in fixed ratio; -table salt nacl. Elements have 1 or 2 letter symbols- periodic table. Oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen are the main things all living things are mad e up off- 3 subatomic particles: nucleus and electrons cloud of negative charge- 2 electrons. Neutron nuclear particle with no charge mass(little p)= mass (littlen)= ~1. 7 x 10^-24g. Electron atomic particle with negative charge ~1/2000 mass (little p or n) Atomic mass determined by number of protons and neurons. Isotopes- different forms of the same thing ex carbon 12. Nuclei are not directly involved in most chemical reactions.
