Document Summary

Photosynthesis is the ability to capture sunlight energy and convert it to chemical energy stored in complex organic molecules, releasing oxygen as a by-product. Organisms obtain organic compounds through: autotrophic or heterotrophic nutrition. Autotrophs produce organic molecules from co2 and other inorganic materials obtained from environment. Almost all plants are autotrophs; the only nutrients they require are water and minerals from the soil and carbon dioxide from the air. Plants are photoautotrophs, using light as a source of energy to synthesize organic compounds. Heterotrophs live on organic compounds produced by other organisms. The most obvious type of heterotrophs feed on organisms. Other heterotrophs decompose and feed on dead organisms or organic litter, like feces and fallen leaves. Ex: decomposers almost all heterotrophs are completely dependent on photoautotrophs for food & oxygen. All green parts of a plant have chloroplasts. Leaves are the major sites of photosynthesis for most plants.
