Document Summary

Pigment: any substance that absorbs light (the absorption of light energy starts photosynthesis) Absorption spectrum: the major pigment of photosynthesis; extract by boiling leaves in alcohol to get photosynthetic pigments. Put those pigments in front of a prism and pass it through a chlorophyll mixture to see which ones are absorbed. Chlorophyll a (major photosynthetic pigment) is in the blue range. In the middle of the spectrum there is little to no energy absorbed because chloroplasts reflect the green light. Chlorophyll b/ carotenoids (beta-carotene) make up the rest of the chlorophyll. Beta-carotene which is orange has a relative in plants called xanthophyll which is bright yellow. Expand the light energy that can be used in the process of photosynthesis (improve the efficiency of photosynthesis by absorbing lights in parts of the spectrum where chlorophyll a doesn"t), 2. Chlorophyll"s are very unstable and have the risk of taking in too much energy; beta-carotene and xanthophyll protect against this.
