Document Summary

An atom is the smallest quantity of matter that still retains the properties of matter. An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into two or more simpler substances by any means. Ex: gold, oxygen, helium: dalton said atoms are tiny, indivisible particles, once a single atom has been obtained, dividing it smaller produces subatomic particles. Cathode ray tube consists of 2 metal plates sealed inside glass tube where most of air has been evacuated. Beta rays: electrons so they are de ected away from the neg charged plate. Gamma rays: have no charge and are unaffected by external electric or magnetic elds. Protons are pos charged and found in nucleus. Neutrons are neutral and found in nucleus, slightly larger than protons. Electrons are neg charged and found around the nucleus.
