Sociological: humans are social beings, communication is the primary means of being social. Psychological: behaviors/attitudes/values/beliefs, interpersonal communication, influence of media. Political science: political movements, mass communication, nixon vs jfk, Anthropological: we construct our sense of self and society is through. Our interactions are the symbolic means through which we construct self and society. Assumes that communication is a behavioral process. Encoding, decoding, noise, feedback = psychological behaviors. Construct our societies/realities in which we live. Heavy emphasis on shared meaning (smile smile back) Communication is the symbolic process by which reality is produced, maintained, repaired, and transformed. Communication plays a fundamental role in the production and maintenance of shared meanings in the production of culture. Focuses on the structure of communication; assumes communication is methodical/rule-based. 3 goals of public speaking: persuade, inform, entertain. Components of credibility: trust, goodwill, knowledge, authority. Must know audience/understand who you"re talking to. Attitudes: opinion anyone has on a topic.
