Jewish revolt (66-70 ce): jews try to escape the roman empire romans kill jews & destroy the temple. Persecution of christians is episodic (a lot or none: make them offer incense to the emperor, means he is a god, offering their bodies up as martyrs just like christ did. Christian martyrdom passes on a kind of virtus: anyone can be a martyr = anyone can have virtus, death & honor are @ heart of roman culture. Western church rome & constantinople: accept council of nicea. Edict of toleration constantine allowed christianity to be legal. Rome: republic: 510-27 bce, principate: 27 bce-284 ad, dominate: 284 ad - , crisis of the third century (235-284 ce) . 26 emperors during this period: only 3 of them were orderly succession, only 2 sided natural deaths, 25 of them were in a span of 30 years. 41 unsuccessful revolts where people tried to become emperors.
