Jim crow- name for the entire social structure in the south (umbrella term) Law mandated that blacks had to sit in the backs of buses, etc. After civil war, the north wanted to make sure blacks would have a voice in politics- reconstruction. Over a decade after the civil war ended, the federal government kept a presence in the south to make sure blacks were treated equal. Reconstruction offered promise to blacks, people believed things could change- pre jim crow era. Government gradually starts losing interest in reconstruction and they think as long as reconstruction continue the country will be divided, white southerners were given back political control and they stripped blacks of their little political voice. 1896- plessy v. ferguson- the court declared public facilities can be divided by race as long as the same services were provided- separate but equal. Reinforced the idea that blacks and whites were two groups that were fundamentally different: terrorism against african-americans.
