HIST 1020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Bourgeoisie, Proletariat, Socialist Mode Of Production
Document Summary
Political ideology creates master narratives about the world and society. Political philosophies or ideologies that replace the role of religion in everyday life. Both socialism and nationalism developed during the french revolution (however) both required a context providing mass political mobilization to become secular religions . Heightened class antagonism and the development of class consciousness . Neither inherently opposed to, or in favor of, democracy. Nationalism: devotion to the interests of the nation. Nation is community of people who share characteristics, speak same language, same religion, same traditions, same ethnicity, same culture, etc. Independent, sovereign people accountable to only each other. Political entity whose physical boundaries are defined by cultural and ethnic boundaries. Nationalists opposed to empire, because empires rule over multiple ethnicities. Imagined communities- don"t correspond to realities on the ground, because most populations consist of various ethnicities and languages, etc. (example: alsace-lorraine) Choice #1: embrace culture of larger nation (assimilation)
