Statistics is a set of methods and rules for: (cid:12254) (cid:12254) (cid:12254) Data are numbers that describe attributes of people, objects, or events, e. g. (cid:12254) (cid:12254) (cid:12254) (cid:12254) Cost of living: price of goods and services. We quantify the attributes through a measurement process. Not all students are equally fast when adding numbers. The prices of goods and services vary in different market. Temperature changes are not the same all over the word. Not all individuals obtain the same score in introversion test. Data analysis/ statistics try to nd systematic patterns in the ever-present variability in data. (cid:12254) I. e. describing means, frequency of values in the data, etc. Data analysis or statistics is closely related to the scienti c method: (cid:12254) the scienti c method is and objective and empirical procedure to obtain knowledge about nature. Objective: the procedures to obtain knowledge can be replicated by anyone. Empirical: hypothesis about nature are contrasted against empirical observation or data.
