Gerontology: study of old age, basic personality traits remain stable, agreeableness, satisfaction. Grandparents: adults can spend as much as 1/3 of their lifespan as grandparents, beliefs, values, and standards. Grandchildren: grandmothers vs. grandfathers, maternal grandparents, typically bond closer between same sex, maternal grandmother-granddaughter bond is strongest. Social class/ethnic factors: low income families, children in single parent families, african-american/asian/hispanic grandparents, multiple generations in one house, 2 million american children are being raised by their grandparents, legal custody, child support, grandmother group. Great-grandchildren: most grandparents do not have a close relationship with their great-grandchildren. Positive aspects of being a grandparent: valued elder immortality through descendants, re-involvement with personal past. Changing role of grandparents: technology, peers, mobile society, adult communities. Adult grandchildren: provide a wider network of support, someone to visit you in your advanced age.
