Cooley identi es 2 diff types of groups in society. Relationships are diffuse: individuals relationship w other group members change. Secondary groups have clear instrumental purpose, no intimacy ex. In a primary group no one can really be replaced ex. Perfect example of a speci c set of characteristics is an ideal type. Ideal types are used to help us categorize things. Some have more characteristics of the ideal type than others. By comparing real world groups to ideal types there is a basis for analyzation slide. Reference groups see their designated place in the world. A person can adopt as their reference group a group that they dont belong to, can result in positive or negative evaluation slide.
