Document Summary

Equilibrium- when the forward and reverse reactions occur at equal rates, so the concentration of reactants and products does not change over time. Reactions will move toward equilibrium ratio of one to the other doesn"t change (products to reactants) Closed systems can eventually reach equilibrium, because there is no change in free energy. Maximum stability = equilibrium = no system changes = no energy to do work! Cells are not static (open system), so if there is no free energy to drive any sort of work, this will cause them to die ! The constant flow of material into and out of a cell is what keeps a cell from not reaching equilibrium. The fact that metabolic pathways are never at equilibrium is a defining feature of life!!! without this we could not exist. Energy coupling is a way of linking the two different reactions together, energy releasing/energy using. A cell does three main kinds of work:
