Document Summary
When things are heated and conflicts come, team members will act in different ways, which will make managing the problem harder. Understanding the many ways you and other people handle conflict is the first thing you should do to manage conflict. People respond to conflict in two ways: assertiveness, cooperativeness. Assertiveness is the extent that someone tries to satisfy their personal concerns. Cooperativeness is the extent that people try to satisfy concerns held by other people. These two dimensions help define five styles of handling conflict. People with the competing style respond to problems with assertiveness and are more uncooperative. They focus on getting their accepted desires and ideas but disregard other people"s ideas. They use their status, rank, or ability to argue with others to make sure they will get their way. Competitors might think they have the best ideas, or they might stand up for what is right.
