Note: totally new lens for this section. India, sri lank, bangladesh, pakistan, afghanistan, nepal---just call it india for our purpose. Indus river: first settlements that fall into historic era (harappa- proto-historic: laid out on grid patterns, n/s axis. Large water tank, mohenjo-daro, indus valley (harappan) civilization, c. 2600-1900 bce: part of a larger building complex. Incense burner: long tail, defined feet with hooves. Steatite seal with buffalo?, indus valley civilization, c. 3000-1500 bce: stylized detailing of body, naturalistic, suggestion of depth, cool horn, incense burner. Arya=noble, sanskrit, vedas (system of text)/vedic-transmitted and gathered and written into a system of texts called upanishads. Caste system becomes hereditary and defines social orders/social strata: brahmin: priestly, top of society, kshatriya: ruling class, politicians, vaishya: merchant, trading, shudra: manual laborers (includes artists and sculptors) Rasa: describe mode of reception/way of reacting to a work of art: ni-rasa: no rasa, a failure, rasvat: appropriate channeling rasa on a viewer (nine different types)
