Abstract Expressionism:
Constructivist and Productivist Avante Garde
Review:
Trope- uses a phrase or image in a way that isn’t intended by the word
Metonymy- moving from one element to another
a sail comes to stand for a ship, native tongue
Metonymy requires a cultural knowledge
Signs are fundamentally metonymic because they rely on the combination of signifier
and cultural significance
Metaphor- a trope in which a word or phrase is transferred to represent something else. It
doesn’t use like or as, it says something )S something else. my love is a rose
The last painting was a metaphor in a sense because its combining two things
without like or as the fact that it’s the end of all paintings but not really
If Metonyms are connected to signs, metaphors are connected to symbols.
Language and imagery is fundamentally metaphoric (a is b but not really)
Language:
CROWN- signifies something a person wears but is simply a symbol in one’s mind of
it
o )t’s a cultural leap from the word to the meaning
Deconstructionists argue that all language and all of life is metaphoric, and
deconstruction is the return from the language to the metaphor
