AHIS BC 3626y Lecture 6: Expressionism Discussion
Grids by Rosalind Krauss
How are Grids modernist?
• Krauss discusses how grids depict a spatial and temporal modernity
• Spatially the grid shows that its geometric, anti-natural, anti-real.
• It becomes a trope because its actually a form of repression
Secular vs. Spiritual
• Grid work is minimalist, but it can also be religious
• Most modernists are forced to choose, but this allows the two to collide
• By trying to completely prevent representation the result is veneration
• Relates the grid to a structural analysis of a myth
Conclusion:
• The structure of the grid relates inside the canvas denotes a slice of infinity
• Centripetal and centrifugal – the grid takes you within or the grid takes you out
• What is it about the grid form that challenges history?
o It hasn’t changed or developed and there are all these contradictions
underlying it.
o Krauss is strongly against a developmental narrative and the idea of progress
