Hagia sophia, istanbul, designed by anthemius of tralles and isidorus of miletus, c. 532-537 ce. The first dome that was designed collapsed (weight went too far to the horizontal because the dome wasn"t very tall/steep(cid:322) Plan (a) and isometric drawing (b) of the church of hagia sophia. So dazzling that the eye is constantly in motion and not drawn to just one particular spot. Not a figural image in the apse, but a cross mosaic.
