Can look through the dust in the infrared. Usually gets triggered by density wave, interaction or supernova explosions, or just turbulence in the medium, cloud collisions (galaxy collides with another galaxy). Eventually the center of the cloud becomes dense enough that photons can not escape it, hydrogen forms very effective at shielding. The pressure and temperature in the gas increase as the articles move faster and faster. The temp and pressure are highest in the center, where the most mass is pushing inwards because of gravity. Temp low, density high, more likely to collapse. Cloud to a star, smaller suns take longer time.
