Biol bc1502 intro to molecular and cell biology. Hierarchy: starts with the cell lowest level of organization. Smallest unit of life: multicellular organism, populations, communities built on populations of different organisms, ecosystems, biosphere. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts : emergent properties, course objectives. Focused on the cell: how it is made up of molecular components, how it functions as a unit, how it can contribute to the emergent properties of the next level of organization the organism, properties of living systems. Dna and rna: contains chemical instructions for structure and function. Metabolism: engages in metabolic activity, energy + matter flow through the system. Maintaining homeostasis: compensate for changes in the environment. Reproduction: creates progeny through asexual and sexual production. Mutation + evolution: changes from one generation to the next, cell theory. All organisms are composed of one or more cells. Cell is the basic structural and functional unit of all living things.
