Document Summary
53% of human communication time is spent in listening! Yet 75% of our listening time, we are preoccupied, distracted, or forgetful! We understand and remember less than 20 - 25% of what we hear! Your ears pick up sound waves being transmitted by a speaker. Making sense out of what is being transmitted. Paying close attention to what we hear. Language (verbal) - spoken or written words. Paralanguage (vocal) - tone, pitch, volume, rate, emphasis, etc. Non-verbal (visual) - eye contact, facial expressions, posture, personal appearance, visual aids, etc. When we listening for enjoyment or pleasure. When we are listening to provide emotional support for the speaker. Expressive communication (women often do) respond to show similar feelings or support. Ex: how terrible! : that must have been awful! Instrumental communication (men often do) respond to provide solution. Ex: you need to report that to your boss! : can you just withdraw from that class? .
