How is the us involved in imperialism. Conflict and control of former spanish colonies through war: with mexico, with cuba, with the philippines. Spanish colonies have difficult time maintaining political stability: 1810 first attempt at independence from spain. Miguel hidalgo, priest: calls for revolution, dia del grito day of the call, army of indians march to mexico city, hidalgo executed. American imperialism steps in to fill vacuum left by decline of spain: monroe doctrine, 1823. Antonio lopez de santa anna: overthrows iturbide, becomes dictator 1833: napoleon of the west . Santa anna comes back from exile to fight u. s. and regain mexican presidency (after claiming he didn"t want to be president and telling the u. s. he"d sell them territory) Us victory: mexicans resist, taos revolt: 1847, mexico surrenders texas, california and new mexico in treaty of guadelupe. Hidalgo, 1848: us pays million, war cost 13,000 american lives, 50,000 mexicans. Caudillo general santa anna fell from power 1848.
