Document Summary

Contracting one member of the antagonistic pair moves the body, whereas contracting the other muscle restores the body and first muscle to their original position. Ex- contract a muscle to bend your arm at the elbow by contracting an opposing muscle to straighten the arm and stretch the first muscle. When bones contract, they use bones as levers for resistance and motion. Motion produced by muscular contraction also depends on the design of the skeletal system. Tendons: where muscles are attached to bones by connective tissue that adhere to spines, knobs, ridges, and depressions on bones. Origin: the end attached to the bone that does not move during contraction. Insertion: the end of the muscle attached to the bone that moves during a contraction. [muscles] action: movement caused by the contraction of a muscle. Adductors: move an appendage toward the midline of the body. Abductors: move an appendage away from the midline of the body.
