BIO 1305 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Hydrogen Bond, Chemical Polarity, Surface Tension
Document Summary
Polar covalent bonds- oxygen is more electronegative than hydrogen, so the electrons of the covalent bonds spend more time closer to oxygen than to hydrogen. Polar molecule- unequal sharing of electrons and water"s v-like shape. When water is in its liquid form, its hydrogen bonds are very fragile. Water- the substance that makes life possible as we know it here on earth, and possibly on other planets as well. The water molecule we have the electrons of the covalent bonds spend more time near the oxygen than the hydrogen. The water molecule is thus a polar molecule. Polarity allows water molecules to form hydrogen bonds with each other. The molecule (water) itself is a polar covalent bond but the interaction of this molecules is hydrogen bond. Water is cohesive behavior, moderate temperature, expansion, and solvent. Cohesive behavior- the sticky property of the molecules, provoke by the hydrogens bonds of those molecules. Helps the transport of water against gravity in plants.
