Document Summary

Chapter 40 - basic principles of animal form & function. Size & shape affect way animal interacts w/environment. Body plan of animal = programmed by genome. Rate of exchange : cell"s surface area. Four types of tissues: stratified squamous epithelium. Simple columnar epithelium: simple squamous epithelium, epithelial. Apical surface: near the top, near lumen. Basal surface: closer on the inside: connective. 3 types of ct fiber (all made of protein): muscle, collagenous fibers: strength & flexibility. Elastic fibers: stretch & snap back to original length. Consists of long cells = muscle fibers which contract in response to nerve signals. Intercalated disks: nervous functions: receiving, processing, transmission of info. Neurons (nerve cells) - transmit nerve impulses. Hormone can affect 1+ regions throughout body. Hormones: slow acting, can have long-lasting effects. Info conveyed depends on signal"s pathway (not the type of signal) Neurons, muscle cells, endocrine cells, exocrine cells can all receive nerve impulses.
