A previous attempt to set up a colony at roanoke island failed, with the colonists disappearing, and only a carving in a tree showing croatoan was left. Jamestown was a project of the virginia company, which existed to make money for its investors. In the first year more than half the colonists died, 400 replacements came, but by 1610 after a gruesome winter called the starving time there were only 65 people left.
