Document Summary

Chapter 6: operant conditioning: historical background, thorndike. Darwin"s theory says that we share characteristics with animals: so many people sought to investigate characteristics that we do not share with other animals. Later many of these theories fell for example humans can make tools. After days of learning (2wks) they were able to do more often. He concluded that cats are stupid and thus we are kind of stupid. Also, that we learn things slowly and become mature over time and do sensible behavior: everybody knows somebody who keeps doing stupid things that are counterproductive. Law of effect- this learning process described above: the extent to which consequences (leave an impression) of a behavior are satisfying (positive effect/stamped in) or annoying (negative effect/stamped out) determine whether the behavior will be repeated. Issues with this theory as expressed by skinner is that the stamped in/out approach was too mentalistic thus not easily measured.
