Document Summary

For power of the state; social contract (liberalism) government has absolute power. State of nature state of war (all against all) Lived during english civil wars (more authoritarian, reason for beliefs probably) Sovereignty is indivisible; no separation of power. Tells story of naaman (commander of syrian armies); converts via elijah. Worried because he has to worship the sovereign"s idol. Elijah appears to tell him it"s ok if you believe in your heart. Doesn"t take rites very seriously (compared to luther) He has a problem with the new testament (martyrdom) He defines a martyr as someone who is actively preaching/witnessing. His point: to justify his position; we have tons of martyrs that we look up to for denying the state; most of them aren"t real martyrs, he argues. He seems very skeptical of causes of wars of religion. To hobbes, martyrdom shows a lack of faith.
