PUBH 1145 Lecture 7: 7 - Diseases & Disorders of the Blood
Document Summary
7 diseases & disorders of the blood. Plasma : water, nutrients, waste, clotting factors, albumin, antibodies. Leukocytes : white blood cells (wbc: responsible for immunity. Platelets : clotting factors: activate with injury. Use exam and diagnostics to determine cause. Dietary deficient in iron intake: body needs 1-1. 5 mg of iron daily, average intake in us is 10-15 mg daily. Causes : poor diet, pregnancy, growth spurts, hemorrhage. Iron stores are depleted, hemoglobin cannot be synthesized. Supplemental iron, or in severe cases, supplemental blood. Multiple mechanisms: tb and ra deplete iron stores. Anemia of chronic renal disease: kidneys unable to produce erythropoietin, epogen 1989 synthetic erythropoietin, normal levels of iron. Lack of vitamin b-12: either poor intake or deficiency in intrinsic factor, large rbcs with fragile walls rupture easily. Symptoms : gi distress, burning tongue, yellow-blue colorblindness. If intrinsic factor is the causative agent, it must be done by injection. Folic acid deficiency : often seen in pregnancy, ibd: supplementation.
