Marcion of sinope (d. c. 160) asserted: Christianity is a religion of love, not law. Teachings of ot are incompatible with nt. Ot god merely created the world and was obsessed with idea of law: fixing the canon (marcion"s) Only included pauline epistles, no works of john, no revelation. Marcion"s canon accelerated the process of fixing the church"s canon. Marcionism continued through 4th century and established many churches. Wrote on book, antithesis(?) but not preserved: reading circle- origen of alexandria-scripture. Look at scripture threefold (body, spirit, soul) Spirit- participation in the hs, mystical, spiritual meaning. Coming out of face of god can"t be a literal meaning. Prepare oneself to approach god, becoming a better person to live a fulfilling life: literal vs. allegorical meanings. Literal meaning is primary, original, or etymological sense of a word, or the exact sense expressed by actual wording. Allegorical meaning is hidden/ulterior meaning, typically a moral/political one conveyed by use of symbols, etc. symbolic representation.
