Document Summary

Stereotype: a widely-held but oversimplified image or idea about a particular type of person or group; a broad, overgeneralization about a group of people (e. g. , females vs. males) Personality: females higher on extraversion, neuroticism, agreeableness; lower on openness (to some extent) Reactions to stress: fight or flight vs. tend and befriend. Childrearing and family life: females with babies, males with older children; also, may perform different roles such as caregiving versus rough play . Starting the day, we are born and continuing throughout our entire lives, we are subject to gender-role socialization. Over time, we learn proper behaviors for females and males. We use this information to organize our knowledge of the world, and to guide our expectations and behavior. Gender-role socialization is evident at very young ages. To summarize, females and males are exposed to a variety of social influences and contexts that shape their behavior in gender-appropriate ways.
