Financial crisis of the time was instigation for this style. Had to be willing to do whatever worked. This meant new things were on the table: women, slapstick, transient theatre. Universality: all genders, quick plots, adapting to audience. Accessibility: go to the people, be affordable, be unique. Instead of worrying about text and scripts, commedia actors worried about finding the funny within the basic structure of a loose story. Had a basic outline but not script: so what we do we need to accomplish in this scene anything in the middle is just fluff, lazzi-plan for a joke that can be used at anytime. If audience knows the characters already you can jump straight into the fun parts: basis of situational comedy, we already know the character so we just put them into a different situation and watch the comedy ensue. All about money: old and lecherous, mr. burns, mr. crabs.
