Document Summary

Musical theatre was born from other artistic expressions. Close to operetta vocally: longer shows. More unity of story elements (music, book, plots) Radio helped make show tunes party of the top hits. Examples: west side story, guys and dolls. 1960s -- time of transitions and it is reflected in musical theatre: war, protests to war, civil rights movement, political strife. Getting classical shows with a more defined structure and emerging rock shows. Rock music begins to take over the radio, replacing show tunes at the top of the charts. Examples: hello dolly, fiddler on the roof, bye bye birdie. Concept show plot is based around a premise, idea, or theme. It doesn"t have to have a linear narrative. New topics explored because of the growth of the 60s. Revivals out of an attitude of nostalgia with all the change: revival performing a production that has already been on broadway again. 1980s fairly lame period in musical theatre.
