Document Summary

Lecture 24: some traits associate the bacteria with the archaea but through genome data and other traits we can see that they are more related to eukarya (archaea) Bacteria characteristics: gram stain, stain that binds to peptidoglycan, only found in bacteria cell walls, used to determine the location of the peptidoglycan, + on the outside. Metabolic diversity limited to small number of genes: can be found anywhere in the world, wide variety of environments. Lecture 24: deep sea thermal vent, no sunlight and a lot of pressure, co2 released from vents, compounds like hexane found around vents, eukarya (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t fu(cid:374)(cid:272)tio(cid:374) here, only bacteria and archaea. Major roles in the ecosystem: decomposers, with fungi, kind of like recyclers, break down organic compounds and release them into the environment. Inject in animals and see if they get sick. Bioremediation: different pollutants are hard to get out of environment, bacteria and archaea have wide range of metabolisms.
