BIOL3030 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Femur, Allometry, Homeostasis
Document Summary
Hard structure in the middle of tooth. Usually in dermal skeleton: stiffer and protective. Sense mechanical stress or influence on the bone. Change in length relative to original length: dimensionless. Taken a lot of stress to strain very little. Teeth is more brittle than skull, is a little brittle and a little flexible, is more brittle than femur which is pretty flexible. Most stff to least stiff: teeth, skull, femur. Area under stress strain curve: work that the bone can edo. Thick femur: absorb a lot of energy. Material is not dependent on cross sectional area. Increases in bats with age: more stiff. Youth: still very organic and growing, and fall a lot so need to be flexible. More stiff at base, less stiff at tip. Need stiffness to generate power to fly. Need to be flexible in case in bangs into things. Support depends on bone cross section, not bone volume.
