Jones and Harris Study!
actors carried out a debate!•
Fidel Castro -> good or bad?!◦
film clips of people debating for 3 mins each!◦
showed these to people in the experiment!•
said it was a debate competition, but how much do you believe the person doing the debating actually ◦
believes in their side?!
Independent Variable -> for half the situations, they told the subjects that the debator had been randomly ascend •
it!
in the other half, the subjects were told that the debtors could choose what side they wanted to debate!◦
!
Dependent Variable -> how much the subject rated that the debater believes in the topic they are arguing for!•
!
We would think that the subjects who were told they were allowed to pick their sides believed the debater •
believed in the topic they argued for!
!
but there was no difference!•
both highly said that they believed in it -> example of fundamental attributional error ◦
ignored the situational demands, focused on the fact that whatever the behavior was, was a dispositional ◦
attribution
!
This has a lot to do with the political conclusions we make !
notion of attribution theory -> distinctions between liberal and conservatives!•
in general, conservatives (socially conservative) and republicans fundamentally adopt a dispositional view on ◦
people's betavior!
the way people behave is a function of their inequalities!‣
liberals are much more likely to see how people behave to be a reflection of their environment !◦
!
!
Sports Psychology!
how do athletes explain their own outcomes?!•
external and internal qualities!•
looking at kinds of attributions, we can distinguish 2 different dimensions!◦
permanent vs temporary!•
internal vs. external !•
!
!
temporary external!
weather!•
luck!•
bad ref!•
!
permanent internal!
motivation!•
dedication!•
!
temporary internal!
not good sleep!•
sick!•
didn't stretch!•
preparation!•
!
permanent external!
bad facilities!•
other team cheats!•
!
sports psychologists!•
how are you framing/seeing your participation in sports!◦
