Lecture 19!
!
Freud!
wrote mostly in Vienna Austria!•
everything had been translated by the 1920s!•
!
!
Psychoanalytic Theory!
Freudian Theory -> modern incarnation, not exactly what he said!•
Orthodox or Classical Analytic Theory!•
!
comprehensive theory of personality!•
maybe a developmental theory of personality!◦
development of a personality or the self over time !◦
!
In addition to being a theory of personality, it also gives rise to a theory of psychopathology
(mental illness)!
terms like neurosis, one way of classifying mental illnesses where the classification goes back •
to Freud's theory of personality!
comes up with an understanding of what the normal person is like, then a theory of •
psychopathology!
showing where people are different from the normal!◦
!
also gives a name to psychotherapy -> generic term, refers to any kind of therapy you provide •
to somebody to do with their mental state!
everything in the clinical world except drugs!◦
that would be psychopharmacology !◦
!
most people seem to do much less psychotherapy and more drug prescription •
(psychopharma)!
!
!
Freud's therapy is a specific type of psychotherapy!
his brand is called psychoanalysis -> very strictly defined, not generic but has a very specific •
form!
go back and uncover things that have been repressed in your subconscious !•
psychoanalysis tries to get you to go back and change things around that happened in the ◦
past!
!
!
Oedipus Complex!
part of the impetus - Freud suggests that boy wants to have sex with his mother!•
only 4-6 years old!◦
seems illogical !•
!
Important theme in Freud -> POSITING OF THE UNCONSCIOUS!
much of what he talks about is going on in the unconsious level!•
have no active access to it even though its going on !•
IT CAN INFLUENCE YOUR BEHAVIOR!◦
!
