PSYC 1121 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Sleep Deprivation, Noble Eightfold Path, Thalamus
Document Summary
Course: introduction to psychology as a natural science. Dreaming occurs during sleep, while hallucinations occur while a person is awake. More frequent than expected (10% of the population) Can be induced (e. g. sleep deprivation, food deprivation, sensory deprivation) Hallucinations are often, but not necessarily, associated with psychological disorders. Susceptibility for hallucinations is associated with brain abnormalities. Hallucinations can be self-evaluated (dreams typically are not). Hallucinations and dreams are brain/self-generated experiences that reflects. The secondary visual areas are active (not primary visual areas). Hypnosis and meditation both direct someone"s attention. While hypnosis is guided by a hypnotizer, meditation is guided by the self. Procedure: relaxation, directed attention, induced suggestibility regarding simple motor and mental tasks (doing what the hypnotist asks) A type of social relationship develops between the hypnotist and person. The hypnotist asks the person to do a simple task after a hypnotic state. There are large individual differences for hypnotism.
